It's one of the most common sources of confusion in home heating and cooling: what's the actual difference between air conditioning and an air source heat pump? The honest answer is that they're far more alike than most people realise — they're built on exactly the same technology. But there are real differences in how they're used, and knowing them helps you choose the right system.
I service air source heat pumps and install air conditioning, so I work with both sides of this every week. Here's the clearest way I can explain it.
The Surprising Truth: They're the Same Core Technology
Both air conditioning units and air source heat pumps work by moving heat from one place to another using a refrigerant circuit. Neither one "creates" heat or cold — they transfer it. A refrigerant absorbs heat in one location, is compressed, and releases that heat in another location.
A reverse-cycle air conditioner and an air source heat pump both do this, and both can run in either direction — heating or cooling. At the level of the fundamental engineering, they are the same family of machine.
Think of it this way: an air conditioner is essentially a heat pump that was designed with cooling as the priority, while an air source heat pump was designed with home heating as the priority. Same principle, different focus.
So What's the Actual Difference?
The differences are about what each is optimised for and how it delivers heat or cooling into your home, not the underlying science.
Air Conditioning
- Primary job: Cooling, with efficient heating as a bonus
- Delivers through: Wall-mounted (or ceiling) units that blow conditioned air directly into a room
- Best for: Cooling and heating individual rooms — bedrooms, offices, living rooms, extensions
- Scale: Room by room; you add units where you want them
- Installation: Relatively quick and non-disruptive — often a single day for one room
Air Source Heat Pump
- Primary job: Whole-home heating and hot water, replacing a gas or oil boiler
- Delivers through: Your existing radiators or underfloor heating, and a hot water cylinder
- Best for: Heating an entire house efficiently and lowering carbon emissions
- Scale: Whole property, as a central heating system
- Installation: A larger project — connecting to your heating system and cylinder
Which One Do You Actually Need?
The right choice comes down to the problem you're trying to solve.
Choose air conditioning if...
You want to cool your home in summer, or you want efficient heating and cooling for specific rooms rather than the whole house. If a hot bedroom is ruining your sleep, or a home office is unbearable in July, air conditioning is the direct, affordable answer — and you get winter heating for that room too.
Choose an air source heat pump if...
You want to replace your central heating system, heat your entire home and your hot water, and reduce your carbon footprint. This is a heating system for the whole property, not a room-by-room comfort solution.
Plenty of homes benefit from both — a heat pump for whole-house heating, and air conditioning in a key room or two for summer cooling. They complement each other well.

Because these systems share the same refrigerant-circuit technology, an engineer who understands one understands the other. When your air conditioning is installed by someone who works on heat pump refrigerant systems regularly, you're getting genuine expertise in exactly the technology your AC unit relies on — not a general installer treating it as a box on a wall.
